Why Your Theology Matters...

A few weeks ago, a friend told me about an article in Time magazine entitled Maybe We Should Blame God for the Subprime Mess. The author questioned whether some fault for the subprime mortgage crisis can be attributed to the prosperity gospel. Not surprisingly, it seems that a number of disciples of the health, wealth, and prosperity message bought more expensive homes than they could afford because they thought their loan approval was a direct blessing from God as a reward for their faith. Unfortunately, in fact, it was often the curse of a greedy broker. Nevertheless, how will churches that preach this theology respond to the fallout after the real estate bubble has burst? Just like Jonas Nightengale, I imagine they will place the fault back on the congregant, i.e. "not enough faith."

P.S. Happy Reformation Day!
