Spiritual Formation and Building Zigguruts

"Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves. . ." Genesis 11:4. Why do we attempt to ascend into the heavens when it is He who descended to us? Why do we try to find him in hidden places when He reveals himself openly through the preached word and the sacraments? It is most often through the ordinary rather than the extraordinary that we find Him. With ordinary water we are baptized, with ordinary bread and wine we do partake of the Lord's supper, and by ordinary men we are delivered the word.
